First International Telugu Internet Conference to Examine Telugu on the Internet

Milpitas, California, USA – July 15, 2011 -- The First International Telugu Internet Conference  will bring together leaders in the field of language computing relating to the Telugu language for a comprehensive overview of this rapidly expanding area of research and development. The Conference will be held in Milpitas, California from September 28-30, 2011 at the India Community Center, 525 Los Coches Street, Milpitas, California.

This conference is a meeting of scientists and technologists working in fields leading toward language computing in the Telugu language. The conference will assess the state of art of technologies and tools available to internet users and consumers of information technology products in the Telugu language, with a focus on the promotion of Telugu on the internet. The conference will also make recommendations to close gaps where they exist in standards and technologies. The theme for this year’s conference is “Telugu in the Internet Age.”

“This conference is a groundbreaking event as it is the first comprehensive conference ever on the computational aspects of Telugu,” said conference General Chair Peri Bhaskararao, Professor of Linguistics at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. “Advances in language technologies such as standardized Unicode character encoding, improved support in internet browsers, personal computers and mobile devices, as well as tools such as spell checkers, online dictionaries, speech input and output and handwritten character recognition are rapidly increasing the use of Telugu on the internet, especially for real end users. However, gaps remain in standards and technologies, such as character encoding, freely distributable high quality Unicode compliant fonts, speech I/O in Telugu."

Over the next decade, internet use especially in towns and rural areas is expected to undergo a profound change. Advances in mobile and computing technology will allow people in far flung areas to access the internet, using technologies that cater to individual capabilities and/or disabilities (such as speech input and output). Broad adoption of internet based information technologies will allow the government to deliver services more effectively and at reduced cost.

“The Government of Andhra Pradesh, through its Department of Information Technology and Communication is pioneering e-governance in Telugu language used by its 80 million odd population,” said Anand Kuchibhotla... “Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh is a major software hub in India. Telugu has been a focus of language computing research and development for some time now, especially in areas of the internet and related information technologies (IT). The Global Internet Forum for Telugu is a key initiative by the Department of IT&C, Government of Andhra Pradesh and SiliconAndhra, designed to facilitate dialog between experts in the area of Telugu language computation for the internet and IT.”

The conference will cover topics relevant to the pursuit of improving the use of Telugu on the internet, drawing from fields such as language computing, natural language processing, speech and signal processing, web technology development, mobile technology development, etc.
